Why Gandhi Rejected Violence in Mass Protest

featuring Dr. Karuna Mantena

12 December 2025 at 5:00 pm

University of San Diego | Kroc IPJ Building

Join us for a public talk with Dr. Karuna Mantena on Gandhi’s vision of satyagraha and the deeper purpose of nonviolent resistance.

Gandhi believed nonviolent protest offered the oppressed a powerful way to realize their agency and shift entrenched beliefs more effectively than traditional politics or armed rebellion.

Dr. Mantena will discuss how Gandhi viewed the strength of protest as rooted in what it enacted through self discipline, self suffering, and moral commitment rather than in the size of the demonstration. She will also highlight why he believed violence undermines these crucial dynamics.

This event offers an accessible and timely look at Gandhi’s political thought and its continued relevance for movements seeking social transformation. RSVP to attend this public talk.
